Soccer Practice, READ & RATE, Vanilla Twilight, and an Action Excerpt

Well, I got nothing done in my writing yesterday. Things were a little hectic with Jim flying out and Scarlett had an appointment. I just never could get on track to accomplish anything. I plan to get my nose to the grind today and churn out some pages of The Council before the kids get home. Tonight I have to coach Jimmy's soccer practice since Jim is out of town for the next ten days. That should be interesting...

I hope you all enjoyed yesterday's post of the playlist, although I'm sure you missed the excerpt. Don't forget you can still go to www.worthyofpublishing.com and read the first five chapters of Awakening of a Guardian in their entirety if you would like. Just please register for free to rate it and leave a comment if you go there. Thank you to anyone who has done that!

Today I'm listening to playlist.com instead of my Windows Media Player (WMP) for something different. I love playlist.com since you can add all kinds of music on your playlists, have multiple playlists, and find new music you've never heard on the radio. Right now, the music of the moment is: "Vanilla Twilight" by Owl City. If you like slow soft love songs, you need to check this out. I actually heard of it from Scarlett's boyfriend Jacob. It's their song he picked out. When she first heard it she cried at how lovely a song it was that he said reminded him of her. I think it suits Evander and Elyssia in The Council too. She lays in bed one night, unable to sleep and puts on music that reminds her of Evander and relaxes her and I think this would be the song. Check it out here, it's number 15 on my "writing" playlist.

You'll also find other interesting songs on my playlists that I listen to as my muse for my writing. Depending on which novel I'm working on, I prefer different music. Train Wrecks is a very dark novel so the songs I prefer are things like "Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson, "Black Swan" by Thom Yorke and "Unsatisfied" by Nine Black Alps. Evander and Elyssia's relationship in The Council makes for a lot of use of love songs although as I get into the action parts more there will be some heavier and faster music appropriate for those scenes. It'll be a good playlist when I'm done with the book. Train Wrecks will certainly have a very different playlist in the end from either Awakening of a Guardian or The Council, just by the nature of the book itself.

Since you missed out yesterday, I'm sure you're looking forward to today's excerpt. Although I cannot stress enough how much you need to buy the book if you want to know how it all ends! This excerpt is from Chapter 10 and takes place that Saturday night after Jackson has been harassing them by driving by the house scaring them all. Finally there is a confrontation with him and this is it. It's a fairly long excerpt.

***********************************************************************

We both were giggling, enjoying the fact that we finally both had boyfriends when we hear the rumble of Jackson’s car again. We sat straight up and listened carefully. I could hear Evander and Nate bounding up the stairs two at a time to reach us. My parents were close behind them.

“He’s pulling in the driveway this time, Elyssia,” Evander yelled out as he came bursting into my room with Nate hot on his heels. My parents were in the room a few moments after the guys.

My father was breathlessly directing everyone. “Amie you stay in here and we’ll sit with you. Evander, Elyssia, and Nate, the three of you go meet him at the door. Try to keep him outside for your best advantage. You don’t need him closer to Amie than necessary,” he was calling after us as we descended the steps and bolted out the front door to meet Jackson head on.

He was leaning against his car waiting patiently, expecting us. “Hullo there, El. How are you doing this fine evening? I see you brought friends with you. Do you think I’m here to hurt you? I just want to talk to you. Alone,” he said looking from Nate to Evander, eyeing them suspiciously. “What do you two think you’re going to do to me?”

Evander was in defensive mode. “We are here to protect Elyssia from any advances you may have intended for her.”

“Ha! She doesn’t need you to defend her. I learned that the hard way last night. She has come into her powers quite well.” He glared at me and I could read his thoughts. You have a lot of nerve to push me away. I’m just trying to help you, El. I need to talk to you.

“Maybe I don’t want to talk to you, Jackson. You’ve pushed me around and threatened me enough. I’m not going to go out with you so forget it. Just leave me and my friends alone.”

“You still think this is just about dating, El? God, can you be so dense, really? I can help you develop your powers so you can become stronger. My father wants to help you too. We want to teach you how to use them to your advantage. Don’t let these people hold you back from your true potential. They are weaker than you are and don’t deserve your protection. I would love to love you and have you, but that’s not the only reason I want you to be with me. We can do great things in the world and have great power.”

I was growing angrier and could feel my temper burning. “I don’t want power at the cost of human lives. I’ve heard what the Atrumens want in this world, a war against the peaceful Geverans without concern for loss of life in the midst of it all. The human race is not meant to be our slaves or puppets to play out your fantasy of dominating the world. They have great potential and just need guidance to learn. That’s what our people are meant to do in this world. We are to guide and protect.”

Jackson laughed maniacally and took a step towards me. Evander was there to block him almost immediately. “Don’t take another step, Jackson. There is no reason to start a fight here. You need to go back home and drop this.”

“I don’t need to do anything you tell me, Evander. You need to butt out of things that are not your business.”

“Elyssia is my future wife. Anything regarding her is my business. Didn’t you hear, after she got out from under your mind control we linked? She has no reason to want you anymore, she has me.”

This fueled the rage growing in Jackson. He shoved Evander out of his way and made a lunge at me. Evander quickly recovered, coming up behind Jackson and pulling him backwards before I could react. Nate ran over and stood in front of me, unsure what else to do as Jackson and Evander fought it out.

Jackson threw a punch towards Evander’s head, but Evander’s reflexes were too quick to allow it to land on its intended target. Evander’s fist shot out and quickly connected with Jackson’s jaw throwing him backwards nearly ten feet. He shook it off and jumped back up, running headlong towards Evander in a tackle position. Not wanting the fight to continue with the risk of Evander getting hurt, I stepped out from behind Nate and motioned a hand harshly towards Jackson, throwing him against the hood of his car and rolling him across to hit the driveway on the other side.

It took him longer to recover this time, and I noticed blood trickling down the side of his head when he reached his feet. He reached his hand up and wiped the blood from his face and onto his shirt. “You can be a bitch if you want, El, but I will not give up. You are too valuable to me, and I will not give in easily. You risk everyone if you do not come willingly.” He staggered around to the driver’s side door of his car and turned to face me as he opened the door. “I guarantee you I will be back for you, soon.” With that, he dropped into the driver’s seat, closed the door, revved the engine, and squalled tires out of the driveway and down the street towards his house.

The adrenaline rush was surging through my body and I was shaking violently and uncontrollably. Evander rushed over to me and wrapped his arms protectively around me. “You didn’t have to do that. I could have easily defeated him, Elyssia.”

I tried to settle my shaking body so my voice would come out. “I couldn’t bear the thought that he could possibly hurt you. I couldn’t stand there and watch him attack you like that.”
